Today was the day that many of us had to go back to work from a well-deserved holiday weekend, and we’re here to give you the rundown of everything that happened while you were busy catching up. For starters, we’ve got a preview of Huawei’s MediaPad 10, and also a look at Ubuntu’s debut on Android, making the Google OS a “full desktop experience.” Read on for even more big news of the day.

Featured: Our Chris Burns has been busy as always summarizing what the latest trends in tech mean for the average consumer, as he shows in his latest two columns – Android 5.0 Jelly Bean is Android@Home, and Barnet & Noble $199 tablet a godsend. The new $200 Nook Tablet isn’t the only new consumer electronics device hitting the market this week. We’ve also got PlayStation Vita, and in case you haven’t kept up to speed, here a look at the PS Vita release week rundown.
Mobile World Congress: So the Mobile World Congress is just about a week away, and we’re still getting in new tips every day – for example, these articles popped up earlier today: ViewSonic Viewpad G70 7-inch Android 4.0 tablet to debut at MWC 2012 and Nokia Pure View camera device tipped for MWC 2012. You know SlashGear will be at next week’s show to give you all the latest scoops. Until then, we’re signing off from today’s evening wrap-up. Be sure to come back tomorrow, same time, same place.

Sony prepares new APS-C compact camera rival to Canon’s G1 X

Highly trusted sources of Sony Alpha Rumors have revealed that Sony has plans to one up Canon’s G1X (as pictured below). This new compact camera is expected to have a DSLR-grade APS-C sensor with a fixed zoom lens. Although still only a rumor, the site gives it its highest “SR5″ rating of being “almost certainly correct!”

Sony’s new offering doesn’t quite have a name yet, but sources say that it will compete most directly against the Canon G1X with its fixed 4X zoom lens, unlike the Sigma DP series, the Fuji X100, and the Leica X1, which all use fixed prime lenses.
But according to the site, the most interesting aspect of this rumored camera is the use of a compact pancake zoom lens. Not only will this allow for an incredibly compact size, but it could suggest emphasis on video recording given the quiet steady zooms of pancake lenses, which have only recently become available to interchangeable lens cameras.
The compact zoom pancake lens could also be introduced as an interchangeable lens for Sony’s NEX line of cameras, suggests the source. This new camera is reportedly almost ready, although no specific time frame has been revealed.

Office for iPad denied by Microsoft

This morning’s report that an image of Office on the iPad was a precursor to a full app release has been denied in kind by Microsoft. The company has said that not only was the report that the app would be coming in just weeks untrue, but the idea that they are actually in the process of creating Office for iOS may well be untrue entirely. Of course this app would be one of the most hotly downloaded document editors on the iTunes App Store if it were released, so we must assume that Microsoft is simply putting a greater effort into releasing a final version eventually.

The other point that has to be made here is that Windows 8 will be coming out this year in full force, and in that the Office suite remains one of Microsoft’s biggest profit generators and drives to Windows for years and years, the group may want to keep it to itself for now. Think of how enticing a Windows 8 tablet would be with Office on it right out of the box? A Microsoft spokesperson spoke to the effect of no iPad release here:
“The Daily story is based on inaccurate rumors and speculation. We have no further comment.” – Microsoft
It was The Daily that broke the story and The Daily that Microsoft is referring to here. There’s no doubt that Office may come to the iPad and iOS as a whole sometime in the future, but for not – Windows keeps it. You can of course grab Office for OS X for your desktop right this moment as well – but mobile remains silent!

Nokia Pure View camera device tipped for MWC 2012

Today Nokia has silently released a video showing off a teaser of what’s to come at Mobile World Congress 2012, in it several panning shots on fabulously high definition photos. This teaser shows off what they’re saying is “Pure View” for a future smartphone we must assume, as Nokia’s big drive this season has been and will continue to be Windows Phone hero devices. Perhaps it’s time to bring the big 12 megapixel cameras in to the UK and the USA on smartphones finally? We’ll see in less than a week!

This trailer is just 22 seconds long and notes that Nokia will be at Mobile World Congress from the 27th of February to the 1st of March. Real time updates, they say, will be offered through their Twitter account – but we all know better that much more awesome and involved updates will be coming from your favorite source for all things Nokia – SlashGear of course! What they’ll be revealing here is exactly what we’ll be covering for you as they reveal it in Barcelona.

The trailer shows off several elements that Nokia says are “pure” in its new camera setup, each of them resulting in a fabulous photo of a snow-covered dock over a lake. Detail, depth, and definition are touted for this upcoming device and/or camera setup for a device. Can you even handle the excitement as it flows through your pores?!
